Who Will Provide Active Service |
|
India's State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has linked a Fibre-To-The-Home(FTTH) deal with local transmission solutions provider. The agreement, worth INR 3.72bn (US$77mn),is seen as a significant development towards the commercial provision of high-speed broadband, IPTV and VoIP services in the country. BSNL's FTTH project will go beyond this, as it has licences to operate across India with the exception of Delhi and Mumbai. The operator has set itself the target of gaining 500,000 FTTH subscribers on its gigabit passive optical network (GPON), which is due to be completed during 2010. By 2012, it aims to have identical GPON-based FTTH networks in a further 25 cities across India, with a customer base of 2mn. This, according to its chairman, Kuldeep Goyal, would be driven by the attractiveness of IPTV services.
Adding to the development of FTTH will be smaller contracts, as awarded to Ericsson in May 2009 for GPON-based FTTH solutions to be deployed for a 3,000-unit complex in New Delhi. The Swedish vendor sees the provision of FTTH as a value-added differentiator' for real estate developers and property managements. |

FTTH Technology |
"Fibre to the Home" is defined as a communications architecture in which the final connection to the subscriber's premises is Optical Fibre. In order to be classified as FTTH, the access fibre must cross the subscriber's premises boundary and terminate inside the premises, or on an external wall of the subscriber's premises or not more than 2m form an external wall of the subscriber,s permises. FTTH service may deliver just one application, but generally deliver several such as data, voice and vedio. This FTTH definition excludes architectures where the optical fibre terminates in public or private space before reaching the premises and where the access path continues to the subscriber over a physical medium other than optical fibre (For example copper loops, power cables, wireless and/ or coax)
